A Birmingham man has been praised for his heroic actions after calmly evacuating an adult gaming centre during a potentially dangerous smoke incident at MERKUR Slots, located near New Street Station.
Raqim Hussain, known as “Rio” to colleagues and customers, was on duty as supervisor when he detected a strong smell of smoke inside the venue, despite no visible signs of fire. Reacting instantly, he took control of the situation, calmly guiding customers and staff to safety while contacting emergency services.
Thanks to his swift thinking and composed leadership, the emergency services were able to secure the site quickly, with no injuries reported.
Raqim has now been singled out from more than 2000 colleagues to receive Employee of the Month, a special accolade awarded by MERKUR, a leading UK gaming company, to team members who go above and beyond in their role.
Simon Rowlands, Marketing Director at MERKUR, said: “Rio’s actions were nothing short of outstanding. He demonstrated professionalism and remained calm under pressure, working closely with the fire brigade and ensuring the safety of everyone on site. We’re incredibly proud of the way he handled a very challenging situation.”
This isn’t the first time Raqim has been praised for his dedication, but colleagues say his quick-thinking during this incident truly sets him apart.
Gavin Bates, Venue Manager at MERKUR Slots on Birmingham New Street, added: “Rio’s courage, care, and composure that day were truly inspiring. He’s not only a credit to our Birmingham team, but he’s an example to us all.”
Speaking after receiving his nomination, Raqim, 32, said: “I just did what anyone would do. I saw there could be danger and made sure everyone got out safely. Our number one priority is always the safety of our customers and staff and I’m glad everyone stayed calm and followed instructions.”
MERKUR is now reviewing Raqim’s nomination for potential national recognition at its upcoming annual employee awards.
